Busway vs Rail: Is the Eastern Busway the Right Solution for Melbourne's East?

TV News Package | RMIT Newsline, Channel 31

As construction continues on Victoria’s $10 billion North East Link—one of the state’s largest infrastructure undertakings—debate is growing around the Eastern Busway and whether it offers a viable long-term solution for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

This Newsline package investigates the state’s most significant investment in bus infrastructure to date, examining whether dedicated bus lanes and congestion relief measures will meet the needs of communities like Manningham—Melbourne’s only municipality without access to a train or tram line.

Through interviews with Manningham Mayor Deirdre Diamante and Australasian Bus and Coach editor Sean Mortell, the story unpacks a complex mix of public transport advocacy, government planning, and the realities of life in one of the city’s most car-dependent regions.

The Borders and Boundaries Episode

We Were Wrong About is a podcast that takes a second look at things we thought we knew. Brought to you by RMIT's final-year journalism students, each episode examines the myths and misunderstandings that have shaped Australian culture, beliefs, and policy.

In this episode, we explore the defining borders and boundaries of how we live, work, and play, and we challenge their existence in modern-day Australia.

Triple R

Triple R 102.7FM Radio Shift - Sports Presenter

As part of an RMIT student newsroom placement, I presented the sports segment of a live five-minute news bulletin on Triple R (102.7FM), Melbourne’s leading independent radio station.

My segment included updates on the latest in AFL, NRL, and A-League, as well as key headlines from international competitions. I researched and wrote the sports stories, edited the script for broadcast, and delivered the bulletin live to air, focusing on clarity, pace, and audience engagement.

This experience sharpened my skills in live radio presentation, concise sports journalism, and working to tight newsroom deadlines in a dynamic broadcast environment.

Triple R 102.7FM Radio Shift - Presenter

As part of RMIT’s journalism program, I presented a live five-minute news bulletin at 12pm on Melbourne’s independent radio station Triple R (102.7FM). The bulletin covered key local, national, and international news stories of the day, including updates on federal politics, weather, and sport.

The shift involved selecting and writing news stories to a tight deadline, editing scripts for broadcast clarity, and delivering the bulletin live to air in a professional, engaging tone. I also collaborated with fellow student producers and editors to ensure accuracy and timing within the station’s programming schedule.

This experience strengthened my skills in live presentation, editorial judgement, and adapting to the fast-paced environment of community radio journalism.

A Culture of Silence: Tackling Homophobia in the AFL

The AFL is deeply woven into the fabric of Australia’s history, culture and sense of national identity, encapsulating positive qualities of connection, competition and tradition.

However, when Port Adelaide player Jeremy Finlayson received a three-match ban for using a homophobic slur in early April, it sparked renewed debate over the culture of homophobia that pervades the beloved sport and the AFL’s seemingly inconsistent policing of such discrimination.

The fact remains: there is not a single LGBTQ+ identifying player in the league. How can we change this culture of silence?
